Nocturnum: Rebirth

Herald of the Yellow Sign 2

Interlude: An Encounter with Mr. Green

As presented to Matthew’s player during the events of Episode 3:

Anita feels that the team is a bit lost regarding this new “Hastur” thing. She’s heard the name before, but in a completely different context, and has never experienced Lyssicus before. She’s sent Matthew to contact an old acquaintance of hers, a man named Timothy Ekloff , who works for an ultra-secret conspiracy group called Delta Green. She says if there’s anything to know about Hastur, they’ll know it. Unfortunately, her old means of contacting Ekloff went away when the pay phone was removed from Craft Avenue in Oakland. So she sent you to her secondary means of contact: a very old and very abandoned military base in West Virginia. Your trip went largely uneventfully; you left a dossier she’d put together in a designated footlocker which had a magical seal on it. You waited around for a bit, unsure of what to do next. It took a few hours for anything to happen, but eventually, a man appeared from the shadows and said, “I don’t know you.”

You exchanged a very long and complex series of coded communications that Anita had made you memorize before leaving, and at last convinced, he shook your hand and introduced himself as Timothy Ekloff. He absorbed the information you gave him and produced the dossier from inside his jacket, then nodded to the footlocker.

“It’s a kind of mailbox,” he said. “Generally we shun magic, but it’s got its uses on occasion. If what you’re telling me is true, Pittsburgh is in for something very, very bad. I need to study this and I’ll let you know what I can, but right now I can tell you this much: Hastur is not a god. It’s not a he, it’s not a she. It’s not even really a place, though there is a place with that name. Hastur and Lyssicus are an insidious infection, and once they’re loose, it’s like Pandora opening a box. They’ll spread like the pox. Like the black plague. Like an unstoppable cancer. I don’t know what to tell you until I have more to go on. Head home and I’ll be in touch as soon as I can. If Hastur is loose in Pittsburgh, the only way to stop it is to burn out the root…and depending on how far it’s spread, that root might be your city. I’ll keep this under wraps as long as I can—you don’t want the Green finding out about this, or any of our competitors for that matter. This is bad, Matthew. Very, very bad. Watch your back, man, and watch your teammates. I’ll get back with you as soon as humanly possible. I know this isn’t much help right now, but I need to gather intel.”

Then he steps into the shadows and is gone. There’s no sense of magic—you get the impression that he’s just that good.

You return to Pittsburgh in time for Anita to fill you in on the Conclave and the fact that Hilda and Yun-Xun have been sent there to stop an assassination attempt with the help of an ancient vampire named Amara, as well as that the others are in the steam tunnels beneath the Cathedral of Learning looking for an artifact called the Night Stone. Feel free to read the latest episode log; Anita gives you all the details there, before telling you to head for the tunnels, as Henry and Darrek only have Danny in case things go sour there.
